Great success using therapy dogs in the Xàbia Day Centre

Every Monday and Wednesday for the last seven months, the team from the Asiscan association with their dogs which are trained in therapies, have been visiting the centre. In addition, last Monday there was a visit by municipal officials from Xàbia Town Hall and the Caixa bank, whose social work department has funded this pioneering project. The objective is to improve the health of people with dementia, Alzheimer’s or other cognitive or emotional problems.
It has been found that the therapy dogs create almost a party atmosphere for the 30 seniors involved and that the presence of animals improves their mood, makes them laugh, and they stroke the dogs and try to communicate with them. Also for the workers of the Sister Mary of Bethany Day Centre, these are fun days as Nala, Clara, Dori and Simba scamper through the rooms .
The Obra Social of the Caixa bank puts a high value on the experience and consequently has promised further economic aid, by extending this initiative which was proposed to them by the Social Services Department.
Asiscan has introduced a new game of simple puzzles with the help of the dogs. Throughout the year, they hold many different fun activities like bingo, cinquillo, funny sums, & team competitions, which help cognitive-physical activities, motor skills, and recognition of different objects. Recently they even organised a walk on the Arenal.
