RENAMING OF PLAZA ALMIRANTE BASTARRECHE IN XÀBIA PORT

At Thursday’s plenary session of the Town Council the councillors unanimously approved the renaming of Plaza Almirante Bastarreche, in the Port, which will become plaza Presidente Adolfo Suarez. The proposal from the Culture Committee complies with the request from the Partido Popular group and seconded by Juan Planelles an independent councillor. The square will now be dedicated to the recently deceased Adolfo Suárez, Spain’s first democratically elected prime minister after the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and the key figure in the country’s transition to democracy.
The council has taken the opportunity to remove the honour from Admiral Bastarreche a naval officer from Cadiz who embraced the Franco cause and who is now considered as a war criminal by historical memory associations such as in Cartagena.
