The Conselleria will shortly issue a tender for the drafting of the project to reorganise the port area
The director general of Ports for Valencia Province, Carlos Domingo, has been in Xàbia today to personally see the state of the pier of the north or Levante breakwater, considerably damaged by the intense maritime storms on 19th and 20th of January. About 80 meters of the zone of defence of the breakwater towards the Tango cove are affected. The impact of the sea has moved the blocks of stone on which the embankment is set, creating holes and stretches of the cement platform exposed to the air. This has left the breakwater unprotected in the event of renewed storms.
The works to repair it, budgeted at about 250,000 euros, have been declared an “emergency” measure, as stated by the regional authority. The Ports Authority is in the process of obtaining the necessary economic resources from the contingency fund of the Generalitat. They are now processing environmental permits and seeking a contractor to start the work as soon as possible, which will be undertaken entirely from the land, avoiding interference in port activity.
The mayor, José Chulvi, accompanied Carlos Domingo on this visit, together with the deputy director of ports, Pilar Álvarez, and the head of Port Operations, Julio Marín. They visited the entire the port area, from the Yacht Club to the public area, the fishing docks and the fish market.
The Director of ports stated that in the coming months a tender will be prepared for an overall project for reorganising Xàbia port, a plan that does not include expansion, but rather a better organisation of the current area. The regional official made it clear that this plan will be made in “absolute collaboration” with the Town and will have among its priorities the defence of the fishing sector, a group “to be treated as one of the economic pillars” of municipalities such as Xàbia, stated Domingo.
For his part, the mayor thanked the head of Ports for their concern from the outset about the damage caused by the storms and agreed that it is essential to work together to improve the port area, an emblematic infrastructure of great importance for Xàbia.
